A survey of Australia’s most dangerous cities by the Institute of Public Affairs has revealed a stark divide between those areas with the highest numbers of murders and those with the lowest.
Key points:The institute found that the safest cities are those with a population of more than 20,000People in the survey were asked to rate the most dangerous places on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 meaning “very safe” to 10 “very dangerous”.
The institute says this is based on data from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BCSR) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The results show the safest city to live in Australia is Melbourne, with a crime rate of 0.09 per 100,000 people.
But it is the second-most dangerous city, at 0.05, in Brisbane with a rate of 1.3 per 100.
Across the country, Brisbane has a murder rate of 2.7 per 100 people, while Sydney has a rate between 2.3 and 3.2 per 100 in the same age group.
Brisbane also has the highest murder rate in the state with a murder every 2 minutes of every 100 people.
The second-highest rate is in Adelaide, with 1.8 murders per 100 population.
Sydney has a lower rate of homicides than Brisbane, with just under half the population in the northern state having been murdered, with Melbourne having the highest rate at 8.4 per 100 residents.
